about

These songs were inspired by time spent on the shore of Lake Babine, in my province of British Columbia, in the winter of 2011. At the time I lived and worked at a nearly empty fisheries conservation facility, surrounded by massive wilderness and decaying remnants of Gold Rush era shacks, only two other humans within the surrounding one-hundred kilometers. I took refuge on those cold nights in a small room filled with the few instruments I had brought with me and recorded what became the first Crooked Mouth demo. I dubbed copies of this tape over a box of abandoned cassettes found in the basement and printed the covers on an inkjet office printer. From the beginning it was clear this would be a fiercely independent and unorthodox undertaking. The release was posted on a few music blogs, and I got a few orders from interesting far-away places, enough to make me think maybe this was worth continuing.

Returning home to the southern coast of the province, I decided to take these songs, and an acoustic track from my metal band, Harrow, and re-record them. I strove to use only acoustic instruments (save for the bass). The result is a strange brew of nature mysticism and local mythology which was just a prelude to what the newly formed project would become. This is the sound of a more simple time, a time of long walks through forests, rivers, and mountains, conversations with ravens, youthful enthusiasm, and musical experimentation. Over the years, what started as a humble oddity became my life’s main artistic vehicle.

All instruments were performed, recorded, and mixed by Crooked Mouth, winter 2012-13 in Squamish, B.C. The music was made using two guitars: a Japanese classical, and a twelve-string, as well as a bodhrán, a large Tsimshian kettle drum, deer and moose antlers, several percussion shakers, a tin whistle, trombone, and an electric bass.

Tracks 9-11 were recorded in 2014 and released digitally, they mark the end of what I consider the “early years” of Crooked Mouth.

Somewhere around 2014, the hard drive which contained the original recordings was destroyed, and no other backups exist, making a more extensive remix of these songs impossible. The album was generously remastered from the original master files, which thankfully survived, in 2021 by Nathaniel Ritter.

Crooked Mouth Vilnius, Lithuania

Founded by Ian Campbell in western Canada in 2012, CROOKED MOUTH has developed their own style of post-industrial folk music, blending influences from the original neofolk wave , with the obscurities of 60/70s acid folk, archaic folklore groups, post-punk music, and the contemporary underground. ... more
